This series contains biographical material of James W. Davidson and also includes papers relating to the Peary Greenland Expedition, 1893-1894. Included is a printed biographical sketch of Davidson (1923) and correspondence, chiefly letters received, relating to his activities before and after the expedition from his father, Charles Davidson, and uncle Major James Pond, Eivind Astrup, and Robert Peary, 1892-1904. There is also a letter to his father about preparations for the expedition. The papers also include a memorial to Peary (1920) and description of the 1893-94 expedition from the Rotarian, 1936. Also included are photographs (5 items) of the donor and family, 1972. Papers relating to the Peary Greenland Expedition include a manuscript and illustrated diary, July 8, 1893 to March 23, 1894. The diary also contains news clippings relating to Peary expeditions. Miscellaneous expedition papers include an outline of the expedition by Davidson, a list of outfits, instructions and notes from expedition members and Peary, and a report on Davidson's injury by the surgeon, Dr. Edward Vincent. Other material includes records related to botanical specimens, a scrapbook with news clippings about the Peary Greenland Expedition, and memorabilia relating to the Baldwin-Ziegler Expedition of 1901 and Peary North Pole expedition of 1909.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
